Exp. 13 – Simple Harmonic Motion
Dear Students,
Please carefully read the instructions given in your lab manual (pages 117-121) about this experiment and follow the outlined procedure (pages 121-127) while watching the lab video from the link given below. This experiment uses computer data acquisition, so you won’t be able to collect all the data by just watching the video. But the video demonstrates how the experiment works and some of the measurements, such as the mass of the glider or the mass of the magnets, are given in the video. We also recorded plenty of data for you to use, which are given in a zip file below. Please watch the video in full screen and in full HD (1080p) resolution. Some of the details might be difficult to see on a smaller window and lower resolution. To make it easier to follow the procedure, you will see labels on the video showing which part of the procedure is being performed.

This zip file contains 26 datasets. They are labeled according to the the first letter of your last name.
As an example, if your last name is Smith, use the file labeled:
- Exp13-S.xlsx
In the Excel files, there are 5 worksheets containing the following position vs time data:
- Sheet 1: Equilibrium position of the glider
- Sheet 2: Oscillations without any magnets
- Sheet 3: Oscillations with 1 pair of magnets
- Sheet 4: Oscillations with 2 pairs of magnets
- Sheet 5: Oscillations with 3 pairs of magnets
