Purchase the IPL manual: Please make sure that you have purchased from NU Bookstore 2020 edition of the IPL manual by Hyde, Batishchev and Altunkaynak “Introductory Physics Laboratory.” ISBN: 978-1-5339-2230-4. Returning Physics 2 students can reuse 2019 edition they bought for Physics 1 labs. This same manual is used for two semesters, and covers Physics 1 and Physics 2 lab courses in four NU Colleges: Engineering, Health Sciences, Professional Studies, and Science.
Determine your lab section’s group:
Each lab section is assigned a group (A or B). Find out your lab group.
Group A labs start in the first lab week (1/6 – 1/10), group B labs start in the second lab week (1/13 – 1/17).
Locate your lab room:
The room number of all physics labs is listed as CH 319 on your schedules, but your actual lab room may be different. When you arrive on the third floor of Churchill Hall, check the class rosters attached at each door and locate your room.
Before each lab:
Find out which experiment you will perform from the lab calendar.
You are expected to come prepared. Please carefully read over the relevant chapters from the lab manual and complete the pre-lab quiz.
During lab:
We expect you to be on time, you may not be allowed to attend the lab if you are not on time.
No food or drink is permitted in our labs. Throw it away in a hallway trashcan, not in the lab. No open toed shoes or sandals. If you wear them, you will not be able to enter the lab.
Do not start the experiment until after your TA’s introduction and authorization to do so. If there is any malfunctioning equipment, make sure you let your TA know. Do not try to fix it yourself.
Plan to spend the whole scheduled time of 170 minutes in the lab. Working with your lab partner, you are expected to properly record and analyze the data during the lab time.
Before leaving the lab, make sure you email your data and analysis to your lab partner and to your TA.
After lab:
After attending each lab, you will have a week to write a lab report explaining your findings. Each student will write an independent lab report and submit it through Turnitin by 11:59pm one week after the lab takes place (10 point deduction for each day your report is late).
Make sure you forward your TA the electronic receipt that you receive by email after a successful Turnitin lab submission. Failure to do so will result in a 5 point deduction from your grade.
